A Study of Correlation between Self-Esteem and Anxiety in Hemodialysis


Abstract
This study was attempted to Identify the relationship between patient¢¥s self-esteem and anxiety for the purpose of helping adjust the patients under Hemodialysis.
The subjects of this study were 101 patients, sampled among four hospitals, including Chonbuk University Hospital, Chonnam University Hospital and two other hospitals being in Chonbuk area.
The research tools are Rosenberg¢¥s Self-esteem Scale and Spielberg¢¥s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) , and interview method was used additionally.
Statistics used in this study was ANOVA and pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient.
The major conclusions extracted through analysis of data are as follows:
1. Test of Hypothesis;
The first hypothesis, The higher the level self-esteem, the lower the level of trait Anxiety, was accepted. (¥ã=-0.6456, p<0.001)
The second Hypothesis; The higher the level of self-esteem, the lower the level of state anxiety was accepted. (¥ã=-0.6352, p<0.001)
The third hypothesis; The higher the level of trait anxiety, the higher the level of state anxiety, was accepted.(¥ã=0.7390, p<0.001)
2. Relation of general background of subjects to study variables.
First, self-esteem showed the significant difference according to sex (p<.05) and religion dopendence.(p<.05)
Second, trait anxiety was significantly different according to such background of subjects as sex(p<.05), age(p<.05), level of education(p<.01), extent of medical advantage(p<.05), stability feeling on supporter(p<.05), and period of Hemodialysis. (p<.05)
Third, state anxiety showed the significant difference according to the level of education (p<.05) and frequency of Hemodialysis. (p<.05)
